Lessons of War

Michael P. Maslanka finds some lessons for lawyers in the work of historian Victor Davis Hanson:

What can lawyers learn from Hanson? Lots, but here are a few lessons I gleaned. First, he quotes Machiavelli, "Wars begin when you will, but they do not end when you please." That’s something to keep in mind when contemplating filing a suit. Second, generals and leaders will mess up in war. Hanson tells us that the winner is not the side that makes no mistakes but the side that makes the fewest mistakes and most quickly learns the lessons those errors teach. When a mistake happens in a case, lawyers should quickly analyze it and react. A side lesson I draw from this: Always question leaders. In war, as Hanson illustrates again and again, they literally lead you to your death. In litigation, they lead teams to very real, albeit less serious, consequences.
