Political Calculations has an exploration of the top ten interview mistakes.
I'd quarrel with the logic of a few of them, but not with their reality.
Some people really may turn down a candidate who wears a three-piece suit to a business casual culture even though doing so may reject a genius. [Churchill wouldn't make it past Personnel.]
I knew a very capable man who did wear three-piece suits but who was, nonetheless, hired by a notoriously casual high-tech firm. After a few weeks on the job, he was told that they wanted - but would not require - him to wear jeans. He made the clothing switch. At least the company wasn't dumb enough to reject him at the interview, but they may be in the minority.
Now here's the real joke. His job was managing their diversity program.
