The issue of project coordination often arises in large organizations. The general rule is to err on the side of overcoordination, but that is somewhat countered by the famous advice that it is easier to apologize than to ask permission.
You may suspect that you have been purposely left out of the loop. Fortunately, those times are not always bad because, if the project fails, you have been given the gift of deniability.
Even if efforts have been made to include you - and those who make such efforts are not always your friends - you can determine whether or not to be present. An old political veteran of Arizona political wars once told me how adept Senator Barry Goldwater was at ducking questionable meetings. "I have just received a telegram from Barry," one of his political associates would announce. "He's snowed in on the Navajo reservation and won't be able to attend."
"Out of the loop" is not always out in the cold. It can be a cozy room with a comfortable chair and a good book.
