History All Around Us

One of my major regrets is not having taped some lengthy conversations with my parents and grandparents. They lived through extraordinary times.

My mother had the foresight to prepare several volumes of family history which are, of course, irreplaceable and yet such accounts can leave out so much. We would like to know more about the relative who won the Croix de Guerre, the one who rode the rails, and the one who was murdered. Going further back, what happened between the family members who were on opposite sides during the Civil War? Why was the family name changed? Which of the ancestors came through Ellis Island?

Science waits to be discovered. History can be lost. Family history, it seems, can be lost very easily unless you make a special effort.

And imagine if she had saved these memories on 5-1/4" floppy disks...

So much for the convenience of technology.

Write it down I say...pen on paper...batteries not included or needed...

Jeff,

That is true but hearing their voices is also desirable. Do both.
