Minor League Appeal

There is a special appeal to minor league baseball. The games are pleasant, less-commercial and certainly less-expensive events and you can spot future major league stars.

An added benefit: The teams often sport unusual names such as the  Toledo Mud Hens and the Charleston RiverDogs.

Alas, the Phoenix Firebirds are no more.

We have the Sounds here in Nashville. For $10 one can get a seat behind home to see a AAA game, as opposed to the thousands it would cost to see a Yankees or Mets game from the same seat.

The level is different, but not McDonald's vs. Filet Mignon different. There also seem to be a ton of promotions. My daughter won tix due to a reading program, and got to walk around the field, meet the mascot, etc.

Some towns are college towns. Some are gigantic pro towns, but there is something to be said for the Vermont Lake Monsters, Montgomery Biscuits, Jamestown Jammers, and Savannah Sand Gnats of the world. Many great people, not just athletes, have come from humble towns.

Minor league baseball reflects the character of a community like no other sport, because no other sport has such a system in place.
