There was a time when everyone recognized that photo and remembered the attack. I'm sure many people still do, but I doubt that more than handful remember the sailors killed a month earlier in USS REUBEN JAMES (DD245) when she was sunk by a Nazi U-boat.

Woody Guthrie even wrote a song, The Sinking Of The Reuben James.
