Sabrina

I saw a small part of "Sabrina" last night - the original 1954 film and not the remakes - and was struck by a very appealing but elusive quality.

The word "style" is inadequate. [I thought of using "grace" but that also misses something.] There is an indefinable and genteel blend of character and kindness which comes through. I suspect that blend is missing from many of today's films.

The French might not even have a word for it.

The idea that an old man can sing how glad he's not young anymore isn't one which would sell in today's youth worship culture.

Wisdom is what I see in the movie, and wisdom's amusement of the silliness of youth. Missing indeed from today's films.

Daniel,

Your point about wisdom may be the quality I'm looking for. I'll have to think about that.

Thanks!

Michael

Sorry, I had surgery this week which may explain why I was thinking of the movie GiGi, not Sabrina, when I wrote this. Ah, meds.

Daniel,

I only saw part of "Sabrina" and so the remark about singing was puzzling.

Have a speedy recovery and sign no contracts until all is normal.
