Little is known of Diogenes that is reliable, but he first came to public attention as a delinquent; he was banished for defacing state coinage. Diogenes was a troublemaker.
He was also a fanatic about equality. When Alexander the Great stood before him and said, "Ask of me any boon you like," Diogenes replied, more or less,: Move, you are blocking the light.
