Entering a doctor's waiting room without having a book to read. Wondering if the mechanic who is discussing a repair estimate has just made up the name of a car part. Listening to people defend a politician for an action which they would have strongly denounced if it had been taken by anyone in the opposing party. Getting a phone call at home from a stranger who calls you by your first name. Seeing university students argue for the restriction of free speech. Hearing that someone took a long walk in the desert without bringing along water. Learning that the old family friend who told jokes and could dance the tango was also a bomber pilot in World War II. Realizing that if you buy a new roof it will probably be the last roof you'll ever buy. Seeing your dog suddenly get nervous and start barking for no apparent reason. Thumbing through an old novel and finding a small paper with a joke that a friend must have slipped in when you were in high school. Waking up and trying to sort out if a dream had actually happened.
