We took the kiddos on a road trip to Rapid City, SD a few years ago. (Yes, we *drove* from Cincinnati to Rapid City! Road trips are great!) On the way, we took a 90 mile detour to see the Ingalls' homestead just outside of De Smet, SD. All of the equipment, the "dugout" and the house, etc. are reproduction and are not original, but you definitely get a good feel for what it must have been like to live there at the time.

The road trips are great for children. I still have vivid memories of a trip from Phoenix to Washington, D.C. as well as several others.
Thanks for the info on the Ingalls' homestead. It sounds interesting.
