Positive or Not Negative?

Which of the following is the more valuable habit in the workplace:

Doing Good or Not Doing Harm?

It may be a close race in many organizations. You can find executives and managers who would contribute enormously if they'd simply leave and dedicate their energies to climbing Mount Everest or hunting snipe. You can also find chair-warmers who seldom do harm but whose "Doing Good" side of the ledger is pretty sparse. Their accomplishments couldn't trigger an automatic door.

Much of it reminds me of the prayer of the hunter who'd been chased up a tree by a bear: "Lord, if you can't help me, please don't help the bear." Similar thoughts - unspoken - drift about many a staff meeting.

My own sense is that while some positions absolutely require the active creation and fostering of good, far more simply call for basic performance and a failure to do harm.
