A Memorable New Year's Day Worker's Protest

On New Year's Day, 1965, miffed at having to work on the holiday, Sales ended his live broadcast by encouraging his young viewers to tiptoe into their still-sleeping parents' bedrooms and remove those "funny green pieces of paper" from their pants and pocketbooks [1]. "Put them in an envelope and mail them to me," Soupy instructed the children. "And you know what I'm going to send you? A post card from Puerto Rico!" He was then hit with a pie. In his 2001 autobiography Soupy Sez! My Life and Zany Times, Sales admits it is true. He was suspended by the station for two weeks for encouraging children to steal.[4]

Hah! And I remember that one - along with the urban myths of the banana cream pie and ball game jokes.

And somewhere, in the belly of my basementt, is my oversized red bow tie with white polka dots ... :)

Jeff,

That's funny! I didn't watch Soupy Sales that much [In the Phoenix area we were more into a comedy show called Wallace and Ladmo] but my wife and some other friends have similar stories.

That red bow tie sounds like just the right touch for New Year's.

Yep - Soupy Sales was a big one up here in the Northeast along with Officer Joe Bolton and The Three Stooges.

And all the way thru high school days, I used to start my day with friends of mine sitting around watching an early morning show of The Little Rascals. Then off to the salt mines of academia!

Great memories!

Jeff,

That explains it. The Soupy Sales fans that I've known are all from the Northeast. I suspect there's a secret handshake.
