Torvill and Dean are doing a celeb ice-dancing show on British TV at the moment and I came across an interesting-if-somewhat-pointless fact while watching it. The maximum length allowed for an olympic ice dance piece was 4 minutes 10 seconds and the shortest they could cut Bolero down to was 4:28 - if you look at the piece closely you will see that in order to comply with the rules, they don't put their skates on the ice for the first 18 seconds of the routine.

That is fascinating. I didn't know about the 18 seconds. That's one solution that worked very well indeed.
