Re crime & pulp fiction:
No mention of my two favorites -
modern day Ed McBain and his 57th precinct series or Raymond Chandler and his detective Philip Marlowe.
I spent entire summers gobbling up these author's books....
If we're going to talk movies, Chinatown with Jack Nicholson and Farewell My Lovely with Robert Mitchum...

Ed McBain and Raymond Chandler are fantastic! I'm also a fan of Elmore Leonard and Tony Hillerman.

And to your list of movies, I'd add The Third Man.
