Lethal Assumptions

What are some potentially lethal assumptions in our endeavors?

  • We want the result we seek.

  • Because we want the result we seek we will not subconsciously subvert efforts to achieve it.

  • Once we've achieved our goal, we will be pleased.

  • Once we've achieved it, other problems will go away.

  • Applying the approaches that have worked in the past will succeed this time.

  • People who should be on our side will be on our side.

  • Our critics must have a point.

  • Our critics have no basis for their criticism.

  • Removing the basis for criticism is a wise move.

  • There's always time for more research.

  • It is always wise to negotiate with opponents.

  • Our allies and opponents are rational.

  • If we do it for one then we must do it for all.

  • We will be able to get all of the information we need for an informed decision.

  • Specifying the details of an agreement is better than permitting certain portions to be hazy.

  • The trivial points will be decided more quickly than the major ones.

Wonderful post, Michael. It's the kind you want to print out on an index card so you can have it with you when you start to assume.

Thanks, Wally!

I always scare myself with my assumptions.
