Quote of the Day

One reason why history is so difficult to understand is that what happened was by no means always what was seen to happen. The storming of the Bastille was - quite rightly - seen as the symbolic end of an era; the reality was the seizure by the mob of a near-empty prison guarded by a handful of pensioners, followed by lynchings.
