Leaving Facebook

Cultural Offering has ended his experiment with Facebook.

Having been teased for not entering the Facebook era, I'm glad to receive his report. Facebook can be one less item on my To Do list.

In fact, I haven't mentioned this to my associates but I'm toying with the Gandhian idea of not speaking for an afternoon each week. [Gandhi went silent for an entire day, but that may be asking too much.]

What is the expression? "In the world but not of it?" Less stress. Some creative detachment. More thought.

Michael,

Does this mean you won't communicate at all (as in blogging) or just not talk? I think St. Paul gets credit for the saying that one can be in the world while not being of the world. The Amish base their manner of living and religious faith on this principle. Living the Amish life style for a month might also be an interesting, perhaps rewarding, experiment.

Thanks for always making us think.

John,

The only restriction would be on talking. Gandhi wrote notes to his staff. Email and blogging would still be doable.

I'm tempted to give it a try.

As I keep getting told 'facebook is a Gen Y,Z thing, you wouldn't understand........' The need to be connected, in real time, and your number of connections defines your personality.

You could always just give up talking, just Twitter your every move, thought, idea........
