Silence of the Lambs scares the hell out of me.

That's a good choice. I thought The Blair Witch Project was pretty powerful.

Metropole by Ferenc Karinthy still has me shuddering...
...especially as I prepare to board a flight overseas.
The protagonist, a linguist travelling to a conference, falls asleep on his filgith, exits the plane, and finds himself in a country whose language, location, and possible exits are all foreign to him. The days he spends waking, acclimating himself, and struggling to escape are chillingly brutally mundane and solitary. It is horrifying because it is believably possible to occur.
I won't be sleeping on any trans-Atlantic flights from now on!
