Great Moments in Advertising Trivia

We've had a running discussion in our office on the name of the naturalist who did the old ads for Grape-Nuts ("tastes like wild hickory nuts").

Rodarte thought it was Wilford Brimley, but now the mystery has been solved. (I could remember the book the guy wrote but not his name).

Be sure to read the comments at the link.

"Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts ARE edible." My favorite quotation from Mr. Gibbons. I recite it occasionally out of the blue to my kids. They usually pause, look at me oddly and then go on with whatever they were doing. Thanks for the opportunity to quote him again.

If you haven't read Euell Gibbons' Stalking the Wild Asparagus, you're missing a treat.

Like eating gravel. Unless you soaked them in milk for a while and then they turned into mushy mortar.

And they're not made from grapes OR nuts.Humbug.

PS - Brimley was Quaker Oats...it's the right thing to do...

Thanks to each of you. I should have known that ad would strike a chord. I'll have to read Gibbons' book.

And you're right, Jeff. Brimley did do the oatmeal commercials. Unfortunately, there are no reports that Brimley ever ate a pinecone.
