Toyota: Premature Burial?

At this point, I'm skeptical of any declaration that Toyota is going down the drain. Consider this quote from a Business Week article:

Toyota's "reputation for long-term quality is finished," said Maryann Keller, senior adviser at Casesa Shapiro Group LLC in New York, a strategic adviser to the auto industry. "People aren't going to buy Toyotas, period. It doesn't matter which model. What's happened is sufficient to keep people out of the stores," she said in an interview yesterday.

Of course, all optimism may be gone in a month.

I read that there was a time when a "check engine" light went on in a Toyota and people thought there was something wrong with the check engine light! That was their reputation for reliability.

Ironically, the bad part is made by a US manufacturer, CTS Corp, of Indiana. There are cars that have the same part manufactured by a Japanese company, Denso Corp, which functions with no problem.

I find it interesting that no one is throwing the parts supplier under the bus...at least not yet.Maybe that's to Toyota's credit for taking full responsibility.

In the final summary, it will be Toyota's response to the problem that will be most important.

Jeff,

I'll be surprised if Toyota doesn't bounce back. They've had a fine product for years and have built up a lot of good will.
