When to Change Your Presentation

You've started the presentation. The PowerPoint isn't working properly. Slides keep popping up when they are supposed to be blank. The remote has gremlins.

Stop.

Don't soldier on and try to make the best of it.

Scrap the PowerPoint and use a flip chart. Don't continue to walk with a pebble in your shoe. You'll feel better and your audience will feel better.

The same rule applies to the room set-up, the lighting, the audio or anything else that affects the quality of your presentation. If something is wrong, make quick adjustments so it works or drop it altogether.

There is an appealing nature to a presenter who throws aside an item or technique that doesn't work. It shows boldness but more importantly it reveals respect for the audience. Too many presenters refuse to deviate from the plan, even if the plan is clearly not working. Their commitment begins to resemble a broken record. It communicates a glitch instead of their total message.

To borrow a message from clutter control experts, "If in doubt, throw it out."
