Daily Tools for Creativity

  • PaperMate Profile ballpoint pens. [I buy them by the box. Marvelous product.]
  • Legal pads. [Yellow. White. Doesn't matter. Can't have too many.]
  • Moleskine tablets. [For saving lengthy ideas when on the run.]
  • Index cards. [For keeping on track and many other tasks. Is there anything they can't do?]
  • Flip charts. [If I can't see it, I can't see it.]

Notice: Nothing electric.

So what are your essential creativity products?

Legal pads and pens. Interestingly, I find when I review my notes that I take in the creative process, it's almost totally illegible. But there's something about doodling and scribbling something which stimulates my understanding of the issues and sets things in my mind.

Dan,

The doodling and scribbling are essential. Circles, arrows, squares, and eventually the connections are made.

Personally, I prefer yellow legal pads because I can see at a glance what was hand-written (my notes) versus printed out (meeting agenda) when everything is stuffed inside the same folder.

However, my preferred creative tool is an excel spreadsheet (or creating an access database report).

Yes. I know. I'm a nerd.

But there is something I love about taking chaotic or complex data and putting it all together in a way that others can understand.

CincyCat,

Good point regarding the yellow legal pads.

As for the spreadsheets, you are right. Nerdhood is confirmed.
