The Energetic Non-Leader

Francis Parkman's The Oregon Trail contains a passage about an energetic, self-designated leader who rushed about, shouting instructions. When ignored, the man would resort to telling people to do what they were already doing. At first, the "leader" had been taken seriously because he looked and acted the part. After he led the expedition in the wrong direction, people began to wonder. A few more mistakes on his part caused them to filter any of his orders.

That took place in the 1840s. It's good we don't have leaders like that these days.
