First Paragraph

The first shots were heard as the General's triumphant cortege, slowly parting the rejoicing crowd, entered the Place de la Concorde on its way from the Arc de Triomphe to Notre-Dame. It was nearly 4 p.m. on that "coronation" day, 26 August 1944.
