My heart went out to 30,000 strangers last week. When I read about the layoffs planned at Ford, I knew from painful experience what those folks are about to endure. I've had the dubious honor of being laid off four times in the past seven years. Although I was prepared for the financial blow, the psychic trauma was more debilitating. I was embarrassed and ashamed. As a Stanford M.B.A. -- with peers who seem to be universally high achievers -- unemployment hit particularly hard.
