Media Feeding Frenzy Update

Ross Douthat, writing in The Atlantic, on the Palin coverage:

Judging by my email, a number of readers seem to be under the impression that what we've been witnessing in the media and online over the past couple days is a very serious, nuanced and thoughtful exploration of Sarah Palin's record in Alaska politics, a comparison of that record to the record of her Democratic opponents, and a sober discussion of whether she has sufficient experience to step in and run the country should John McCain, God forbid, die in office. If that's what you seriously, seriously think has been going on lately, then you should probably look elsewhere for analysis of the media's Palin coverage, because you and I are living on very different planets.

I think there is one topic in her speech 100% immune from the 'Zero' campaign. Her heartfelt and personal appeal to the special needs community.

Quote from the RNC speech:
And in April, my husband Todd and I welcomed our littlest one into the world, a perfectly beautiful baby boy named Trig. From the inside, no family ever seems typical.
That's how it is with us.
Our family has the same ups and downs as any other ... the same challenges and the same joys.
Sometimes even the greatest joys bring challenge.
And children with special needs inspire a special love.
To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters.
I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.

I looked it up, there are 4.5 million special needs indiduals in the US. Now multiply that times the parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, and friends. Then add in the Special Olympics supporters and volunteers. I understand not all will join Sarah, but she has opened her arms to them in a way that an Ivy league community organizer cannot, he can only claim 'present'.

The fate of November is already sealed. Trig is a math equation that beats all theorums.

Go Sarah-cuda!!

There is no "fate" at work here - neither is any kind of destiny decided. The electorate will have at it and that's where the race will be decided.
I don't like Sarah Palin - I'll be up front about that. I believe she is very much a politician and extremely ambitious. A lethal combination whether you're coming from the right or the left.
Case in point is raising Trig as a shield and a banner. And even though I come from the opposite side of the aisle, I was disgusted by the finger wagging at Bristol. And yet again, Palin and company immediately paraded out the supposed father, Levi Johnston, on the tarmac. Even though everyone agreed that family was off limits.
The media is doing what it is built to do - sell "newspapers". They are only a reflection of our demands for more red meat. We continue to be nothing more than the crowd at the coliseum. The snide speeches and echoing applause proves it.
Complaining about it is like buying front row tickets to a boxing match and then whining you're being sprayed with sweat and blood.
A pox on them all.
