A terminology survey: When referring to soft drinks, do you use the term pop. soda, or soda pop?
When I was growing up in Phoenix, the common term was "pop." Soda was a drink with ice cream that was served at a counter in the drugstore. As more and more refugees from eastern and midwestern winters arrived, "pop" was heard less often. I rarely hear it now.
Perhaps it was replaced by "latte."

Funny question! I'm a southern California girl, born and raised. When I was growing up, we didn't use any of those terms. Everyone I knew used "Coke" as a generic term. That changed gradually as more diet and other soda options were introduced. Now I use "soda" and that seems pretty typical for this area (Orange County). I never hear "pop" used except by out-of-towners.

That's very interesting.
Now that you've mentioned it, I've heard of areas where all soft drinks are called "Coke" but I never associated that with southern California.

I believe as more people migrated to AZ, this phenomenon occurred. It Missouri, KC people say "pop", while STL people say "soda".
