The Beautiful Calm of Baseball
When it comes to background noise, there is something oddly soothing about the burble of a baseball game. Close attention need not be paid. The mind can make occasional visits and, if the game is televised, a glance will be quickly rewarded by a beautiful, well-designed field and players who make formidable athletic feats look routine. [A center fielder makes a throw to home plate and many people yawn. Do they understand how hard that is?] I'm not sure why I find baseball to be so calming, but my guess is that particular X factor plays a key role in the popularity of the game.
