Work, Family, and Generations

Sue Shellenbarger looks at the generational differences in just what constitutes a family-friendly company. An excerpt:

Although Kevin Bourke, 30, general manager for a holding company, is still single, for example, the freedom to work from his Atlanta home was critical in selecting an employer; he wants flexibility to see his fiancée and parents, who live nearby, as much as possible, he says.
At a Wilmington, Del., unit of AstraZeneca, more than two-thirds of the 30 employees in a medical-resources group are regular users of alternative setups tailored to their needs, says Donna Holder, the unit's manager; "we don't have set hours" for being in the office.
