When my son found The Battle of Algiers on my Christmas list, he remarked, "This is a little dark."
He's correct, of course, and that brought up the question of happy, jolly, films; the sort that will perk up the spirits. Here are some suggestions:
The In-Laws. Get the one with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin and stay far away from the pitiful remake.]
The Lady Vanishes. [Not a comedy, but a light mystery. You'll be in a good mood at the end.]
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. [Okay, it's long and filled with cameos, but most of the spots are pretty slick.]
Harvey. [Jimmy Stewart and a large rabbit. Marvelous.]
Barcelona. [Two very different young men in Spain. Some dry zingers on management books and anti-American professors.]
The Bishop's Wife. [Cary Grant, David Niven, and Loretta Young. I think that Monty Woolley almost steals the show. Grant is a rather worldly angel.]
Michael. [John Travolta as an even more worldly angel who is the target of a tabloid.]
