Donald Rumsfeld once noted that when White House aides and cabinet officials get a decision from the president, they should also try to get a precedent. That way, they don't have to trot back for a similar decision the next day.
It seems like a minor technique, but over the course of a year it can save a sizable amount of time and you don't need to work in the White House to put it to use.
