There is probably an exception out there, but I've never met a firefighter who didn't love the job. As one assistant fire chief told me, "There's nothing else that quite matches the excitement that comes over you when that alarm bell sounds."
Other jobs may not be in the territory of those that involve alarm bells and sirens and yet there are certain aspects to many that might be the rough equivalent. What is in your job? What is it in the jobs of your co-workers?
And if that sense of urgency and importance is not present, how can it be summoned?
