Alas Poor Typewriter, We Knew Thee Well

I think this news about the closing of the last typewriter company in the world is rather sad.

If you'd like a neat replica, consider this bookend at Levenger. [Pictured above.]

I read this to my husband who said, "The computer may have brought an end to typewriters but the calculator still hasn't superseded the abacus."

And for some of us, the abacus has not replaced the fingers.

Not quite dead yet.

Swintec, a New Jersey company, is still making typewriters under its own name. True - they're manufactured outside the US, but most of them are brought right back here.

Their biggest customers? The government...and prisons.

Go figure. Must be some connection.

Jeff,

That's great to hear. (I still prefer a typewriter for typing envelopes.)

I'll check them out.
