Interesting, I like old advertising. I undertook some further investigation this ad appeared in a June-July 1959 Gunsmoke #15 http://www.comics.org/details.lasso?id=105619, and I am assuming other places as well but it dates the ad. If we take inflation alone into account, $38.88 in 1959, in comparison is worth in 2009 $289.52 +TAX (http://www.halfhill.com/inflation.html) So to compare Walmart has a 26" Men's Schwinn Point Beach Cruiser Bike for $159.00 (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5585804) and it's full of 'cool' stuff, advertising doesn't change much. We are much luckier than we were in the past, we just think things were simpler then, but I bet this one is not made in the USA.
