You Think You're So Smart

Managing Leadership asks some thought provoking questions and wonders, "...[M]ight geniuses routinely miss things that common-sense types perceive rather more easily, and the reverse?"

[Execupundit note: In my case, the more I've managed to learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.]

In my younger days I worked in a facility with dozens of PHD's - we used to say that you could educate 'em but you could not train 'em :-)

Ditto.

To add, it is sometimes humbling when you have learned so much.

Some people are better at some things than others. A leader is able to achieve better performance and productivity from a group by identifying and managing an individuals qualities to achieve the best overall outcome, this is most easily achieved where there is diversity. Consider having 10 clones of the same person or 10 different people. Identify a persons best and maximize it. Hence the effectiveness of a leader is enhanced by the time, effort and skill devoted to watching and learning another's abilities.
