Opening Ceremony: More is Less

Watching the opening ceremony for the Olympics.

Am I the only person who feels the drummers were a tad Orwellian?

I have never heard the word Harmony so many times over the course of 4 hours...

It was a good show, the culture they are trying to present vs. reality will be exposed over the next 17 days.

With all those fire works, it's no wonder they have an air quality problem...

Dave,

Interesting observation. I cringed at hearing one commentator describe the virtues of stability. The "Harmony" theme will receive a lot of play.

The group of people I was watching with couldn't let go of the joke that any missed action by the performers would lead to life in prison or death. Communism makes for a big PR problem.

Matt,

There was more than one "Albert Speer would be proud" reference in my circle.

Hate to be contrarian but I think they were just being Asian. That kind of thing has been going on for generations, long before the modern era. How else would the Great Wall have come about? (Or the Three Gorges Dam?) Gives a whole new meaning to "human resources," doesn't it?
